Why Join The Movement

Advocating for children's mental health is something everyone can do!

The Butterfly Run, presented by Big Lots, is a community fitness event to grow awareness, break stigmas, and raise funds for the On Our Sleeves® movement in support of lifesaving pediatric behavioral health research at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Kids don't wear their mental health on their sleeves. Given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, The Butterfly Run will be virtual. Complete your 5k run or walk anytime between September 1 - October 10 while fundraising along the way. Don't forget to track your mileage in the participant center to receive your finisher medal.

Culminating on October 10, World Mental Health Day, we will broadcast The Butterfly Run Celebration to thank our participants, donors and sponsors for their support. No action is too small. No voice is too young. Together, we can transform children's mental health.

Now, more than ever, the dollars you raise are critical. Children's mental health is an often overlooked and vastly underfunded component of pediatric health and research. Lack of healthcare resources and funding only complicate and hinder efforts to make significant changes that impact our youth during these critically important formative years. Gifts of any size will help us accelerate pediatric mental health research at Nationwide Children's Hospital, which operates the nation's largest program for child and adolescent behavioral health. In March 2020, Nationwide Children's dedicated the Big Lots Behavioral Health Pavilion with the goal of developing a national model for pediatric mental health care and research. Learnings gained from clinicians and scientists at Nationwide Children's will be freely shared to improve care for children everywhere.

Breaking Stigmas

Where the Butterfly Run Movement Began

Generously supported by Big Lots, the Butterfly Run was launched in 2017 with our first race in Phoenix, AZ. The following year we held races in Columbus, OH, Phoenix, AZ, and Charlotte, NC. In 2019, runners gathered in Columbus while others around the country continued to support the cause from afar. Today, we launch ourselves virtually. You can do it wherever you live, and you can even do it from your couch! As much as we hope you will run or walk your way to support mental health, you don't have to actually work up a sweat to be a virtual runner and help the kids!

Proceeds benefit behavioral health research to gather new knowledge and share it globally to improve outcomes for children everywhere.
