As most of you know, mental health awareness is a cause that is very near and dear to my heart, and what better way to celebrate World Mental Health Awareness Day, than with a virtual run in support of just that. And, a butterfly run no less!
Three years ago I had my first manic episode that coincided with my friend Cassie completing suicide. Even with a degree in psychology it completely caught me off guard and was one of the most traumatizing and soul shaking experiences of my life. The following year, I had my second manic episode and I was officially diagnosed as Type I Bipolar. The past three years have been quite the wild ride for myself and my family and friends who have been with me on this journey. It has been a struggle to find the right doctors, the right medication, and the right routine. And, with my over the moon highs, and lower than low lows, it has been the ultimate quest for balance. I’m glad to report that I am doing extremely well. Feeling like my happy, go-getter self from my days before any of this started. This will be a lifetime battle, I know, but I feel like I have turned a corner and feel full of hope even in these challenging times. Nature, mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and self compassion have been my biggest allies. The process of becoming a butterfly is not an easy one, it is a complete metamorphosis. I feel like I have finally gained my wings and I am so excited to celebrate with you all!
The Butterfly Run, presented by Big Lots, is a community fitness event to grow awareness, break stigmas, and raise funds for lifesaving pediatric behavioral health research at Nationwide Children's Hospital. More than just another 5K run and walk, The Butterfly Run is an event for anyone around the country to come together to advocate and improve outcomes for children living with mental illness. Invest in the future of children's mental health. Join me in this On Our Sleeves movement for children’s mental health.
All donations are tax-deductible and will be acknowledged by Nationwide Children’s Foundation.
On behalf of the patients and families of Nationwide Children’s Hospital, thank you for your support!
