My Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon & 1/2 Marathon Fundraising Page!
Running has never been my strong suit, but this October I will be running to support an institution that has been integral to me and my family. Nationwide Children's Hospital has been a place we go regularly for X-rays, bone scans, infusions, sleep studies, pulmonary funtion tests; and visits with neurologists, pulmonologists, orthopedic surgeons, metabolic bone disease specialists, interventional radiologists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists.
We have been coming to NCH since Adyn was small. She was in the PICU with pneumonia at age 6. They have kept her lungs healthy since. They have monitored her osteoporosis and regular IV medications to treat it. They have been a center of research for spinal muscular atrohpy - gathering experts from all parts of medicine to form a team that runs a top notch clinic. They have become a center for providing the only FDA-approved medical treatment for SMA itself - Spinraza. This is a medication administered via spinal tap multiple times a year.
Obviously, we have the most long-standing relationships with the neuromuscular and pulmonary physicians... But ortho is a close second! Adyn underwent a 10 hour spinal fusion surgery in 2018 and spent 8 days at NCH recovering before coming home. She is doing amazing and the care provided by her surgeons, anesthesiologists, pulmonologists, nurses, therapists, and the entire staff of NCH was unbeatable! Every single person we interacted with was kind, helpful, and caring. She had music therapy and massage therapy in her room during her stay. Every one was truly part of a team and they worked together to get her back on her wheels ASAP.
In addition to all the amazing medical staff of doctors, nurses, and therapists - I want to give a special shout-out to the child life specialists employed at Nationwide. This is an amazing group of people trained to provide emotional and moral support for kids undergoing tougher things than most adults ever have to face. They do it with grace and humility. Adyn has developed very special relationships with these support personnel and they have been amazing to work with.
I hope that you will consider making a donation in celebration of all the amazing things Nationwide is doing not just for my kid, but kids all over the state, country, and world. From treating a bone broken on a playground (that was our younger daughter!) to comprehensive care for rare orphan diseases - this place does it all, and does it well.
This year I am asking for donations to help support care in the pediatric ICU - a place familliar to Adyn, but a place that takes care of the sickest of the sick kids in all areas of medicine. We recently lost a dear family friend at the young age of 10 after she battled an infection and spent 3.5 weeks in the PICU at Univeristy of Virgina Children's Hospital. It is in honor of Norah that we choose to direct our efforts to critical care for this year's marathon fundraising. Norah was a vibrant, passionate, and loving 10 year old who loved music, the ocean, her family and friends fiercely. Adyn and Norah were close and would spend time together lamenting their younger siblings, watching videos, and reading.
Every child deserves access to the best critical care although we wish it was never needed. Nationwide is proving that care day in and day out. I have lived and experienced it myself.
Donate. Join my team and get your friends and family to donate. Run the race.
