Within 24 hours of birth, a murmur was detected in Evelyn’s heart. She was transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital where she had open-heart surgery. After spending 11 weeks in the hospital, Evelyn was discharged. At age one, Evelyn was diagnosed with Sotos Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder characterized by excessive physical growth during the first years of life. Evelyn also had eye muscle repair surgery and urinary reflux surgery.
Evelyn continues to have positive updates with the Cardiology and Genetics teams. She will enter the 3rd grade this fall and enjoys reading, movies, listening to and singing music. She has been a Wigs for Kids donor and has participated in youth soccer.
“Nationwide Children’s took in our daughter when she needed it most. They cared for her, performed, and accomplished extraordinary work on a regular basis, and gave our family hope and a path forward. Since Evelyn’s initial stay, we continue to rely on their specialists and speech, occupational, and physical therapy resources. We are extremely grateful to have Nationwide Children’s nearby. It will truly serve as a lifelong resource for Evelyn and countless other children and families,” says Bill, Evelyn’s father.
