Meet Cody
Age at the time of the Marathon: 17
Diagnosis: Spina Bifida
Hometown: West Lafayette, OH
When Cody’s parents, Wendy and Matt, found out they were having twins, they were overjoyed. But at a routine ultrasound to learn the genders, their world was turned upside down. They learned that Cody had a severe form of spina bifida.
Cody was transferred upon birth to Nationwide Children's Hospital and immediately went into his first of 27 surgeries. Cody’s surgeries have ranged from brain surgeries, including shunt placements, tethered cord repairs, orthopedic, bowel and bladder surgeries, and more.
Cody’s twin brother, Connor, remained at his birth hospital with breathing and feeding issues. During this time, Wendy, Matt, and their 3-year-old son Casey stayed at the Ronald McDonald House and visited both boys.
Over the years, Cody has spent much time at Nationwide Children’s.
“It’s part of his life,” Wendy shares. “As he got older, I was able to leave him and commute to work. That’s how much he trusted those caring for him.”
Cody is a junior in high school where he keeps exceptionally busy. In addition to being a dedicated student despite having to occasionally miss school, he participates in Special Olympics on the basketball team. He is a member of his high school track team where he competes as a seated athlete. He has been the high school shot put seated Champion, and this year was runner-up. He is a manager for his twin brother's football team and is an active Boy Scout.
“Cody has a positive attitude and is an incredible student and person despite all of his daily medical challenges he faces as part of his spina bifida diagnosis,” says Wendy.
