Meet Joseph
Age at the time of the Marathon: 6
Diagnosis: Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection (CMV)
Hometown: Upper Arlington, OH
During a routine prenatal screening, Joe’s mom Erica tested positive for a primary cytomegalovirus infection (CMV), a common virus that is usually harmless causing mild cold-like symptoms. However, a pregnant mother, especially one infected for the first-time during pregnancy, can transmit the virus to her developing baby.
When Joe was born, he was diagnosed with congenital CMV infection. Many infected babies are born healthy and appear well at birth; others are born with pinpoint red skin spots, enlarged liver and spleen, and small head. Regardless of how they appear at birth, many face issues with development, hearing loss, vision problems, intellectual and neurologic disabilities, and more.
Because of early diagnosis at birth, Joe was immediately set up with a team at Nationwide Children's Hospital that included many departments and specialists. He received 6 months of an antiviral medication. Slowly, as he grew, other diagnoses and news came to his family. Joe was diagnosed with brain abnormalities, cerebral palsy, and hearing loss. But none of that stood in his way.
With support from audiology and receipt of cochlear implants, he began to listen and recognize new sounds. With support from physical therapy, he began to walk independently. With support from occupational therapy, he began to manipulate toys and objects. With support from speech therapists, he learned to use an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device to communicate.
“He has taught us so much about the power of a joyful and curious spirit, and about what is truly important in life,” shares Erica. “He brings light and smiles wherever he goes and is determined to live his best life every day.”
Joe just finished kindergarten, where he continues to make new friends, is learning to read, and spreads joy. He smiles wherever he goes!
